19世紀後半、北イタリアのブレガンツェで農業機械の生産を開始。戦後、エンジニアであった２代目社長のフランチェスコ・ラベルダが開発した74ccのOHVモデルオートバイ生産に参入。50年代に入ってから本格的に生産されたスポーツモデルは、1000～3000kmいう長距離の国内の公道レースで大活躍した。
その後、徐々にオートバイ部門を拡大し、高い品質と緻密な設計を武器にブランドイメージを確立した。しかし、自ら課した品質の高さ故の高価格が仇となり、安価で扱いやすい日本のスーパーバイクの攻勢によって、経営上の収支を悪化させていく。イタリア国内で人気が高い125ccに狙いを定め、LB1 125が好評を得るが、会社の収支を好転させるには至らず、ラベルダ兄弟は会社を売却し、オートバイの生産を中止した。
その後、ラベルダ社は次々と所有者を変えるが、'91年、ランボルギーニから引き抜かれたアンジェロ・フェラーリによって、フレーム生産によるスペシャルモデルのコンストラクタとして、ブランドを復活した。

重慶力帆実業集団有限公司。
中国では、二輪および四輪を兼業する大手メーカー。二輪車のブランド名として、旧社名「重慶力帆轟達実業集団有限公司」より、「轟達」のローマ字表記である"Hongda"を用いていたが、北京市の第二中級人民法院（地裁）はHondaの提訴を受け、2004年12月23日までに、"Hongda"の商標使用差し止めを命じた。
なお、二輪車のブランド名は、2003年11月の提訴以前に"Lifan"に統一されている。

The C-1, a fully-electric, fully- enclosed, self-balancing motorcycle is the world’s first gyroscopically stabilized rolling smart phone. In-wheel electric motors (40 kw) provide the power and regeneration, while hub steering keeps you pointed in the right direction with a top speed of over 120 MPH. The C-1's battery packs providing 200 miles per charge. Utilizing electronically controlled gyroscopes located under the floor (putting out over 1,300 lb/ft of torque), the vehicle balances at a stop and stays upright in the event of a collision.
They will start to distribute the C-1 by the end of 2014.

通常のモーターサイクルがエンジンを搭載するスペースに12kWhのリチウムポリマーバッテリーを搭載し、その後方に最大トルク80Nmを発生する交流モーターを配置、CVTを介して後輪を駆動する。 フレームはアルミニウム、カウルはCFRPと軽量素材を多用することで、車両重量を240kgに抑えている。

2012年6月、中国における二輪車の製造・販売に関して、川崎重工と事業提携することで合意。カワサキブランドの二輪車を、両社が出資する製造合弁会社と販売合弁会社を通じて中国市場に提供する予定だったが、具体的提携条件が折り合わず、2013年1月17日に二輪車事業提携合意を解約したと発表した。

2013年1月1日、Lotus Cars と提携して世界耐久選手権に参戦している Kodewa、元VolksWagen Groupデザイナー、Daniel Simon、そしてドイツのHolzer Groupが共同で設立。Lotus Carsはモーターサイクル製造には直接関わらず、ブランド名とロゴを貸し出す。
2013年6月21日、開発中のモデル「C-01」のイメージ写真を発表した。公表した写真は、黒とゴールドのラインが施されたCFRP製のタンク部分であり、レーシングテクノロジーを駆使し、先進素材を採用したフレームに、200HPのエンジンを搭載する構想である。
2014年2月20日、Kodewa Performance Motorcycles (PMC) C-01, Licensed by Lotus として、実車デザインを公開した。
